Why we started explaining the biology behind health headlines
A lot of wellness writing starts with a conclusion — a supplement, a routine, a "trick" — and reverse-engineers a science-sounding explanation to fit it. Modern Biology News tries to do the opposite. We start with the biology: how metabolism actually works, what's currently understood about the gut microbiome, how cells generate and spend energy, how hormones regulate everyday physiological processes, why circadian rhythm affects more than sleep, and what inflammation is actually doing in the body. Then we explain what a specific finding does and doesn't tell you, in language that doesn't require a biology degree to follow.
What "explained plainly" means here
Plain language isn't the same as simplified-to-the-point-of-wrong. When a mechanism is well established, we say so directly. When a finding comes from a small trial, an animal model, or an association without a clear mechanism, we say that too, in the same paragraph rather than buried in a caveat at the bottom. A headline that reads "scientists find X" often means one study found X under specific conditions — our job is telling you which one it was.
A claim earns space in one of our explainers only when we can trace it back to a specific, describable mechanism or a study we can point to. Where the evidence is thin — a single small trial, an animal-only study, or an association without a known mechanism — that qualifier goes in the same sentence as the claim, not in a footnote most readers never reach.
What's in scope, and what isn't
Our coverage sits in everyday physiology: metabolism and energy balance, gut and microbiome research, cellular and mitochondrial health, hormones in their general regulatory role (not a men's or women's performance angle — that's simply not what this site covers), circadian biology, and inflammation. We occasionally look at a specific supplement or wellness product where it intersects with one of those topics, but this isn't a product-review clinic first — it's a science-explainer publication that sometimes touches products, not the other way around. Nothing we publish is written or reviewed by a licensed clinician, and none of it is a substitute for individualized medical advice.
Where the money comes from
Keeping a research-literate publication running costs real time, and that's funded in part through affiliate relationships — where relevant, we link to Amazon and other authorized retailers and may earn a commission if you buy through one of those links, at no extra cost to you. The full detail is on our Affiliate Disclosure page, but the short version is that the commission structure never enters the conversation about what a piece of research actually shows. A product can carry an affiliate link and still get an unflattering, evidence-based writeup if that's what the research supports.
Corrections
Research gets revised, and so should writing about it. We'd rather issue a visible correction than leave an outdated explanation standing.
